About the Department

Sri Ramakrishna Tapovanam, Tirupparaiturai, in Tiruchirappali District is holistic temple of learning for man making institution in Tamilnadu.  Under its Management, the Vivekananda College, which is affiliated by Madurai, was started in June, 1971, intended a residential college for men only.  It is situated on the northern bank of holy river Vaigai at Thriuvedakam West.  It’s one among the educational sector is Tamil Department.

The Department of Tamil is functioning since the academic yeart1971-72 for handling General Tamil and Common Tamil papers for the Pre University Course students.  Consequently, in 1973-74, B.A., Economics and in 1974-75, B.Sc., Zoology, B.com were started respectively. Further, B.Sc., Mathematics, B.A., History, B.Sc., Chemistry, B.Sc., Botany were started in the academic year 1977-78, 1980-81, 1981-82 and 1982-83 respectively, B.Sc., Computer Science is also offered from 1994-95 as a Self finance stream.

The Department of Tamil offers Part I General Tamil for all aforesaid under graduate degree courses from its inception.  Meanwhile, Semester system at the degree level was introduced in the academic year 1976-77 and the Department of Tamil also envisage ensuring quality education with the newly innovative educational planning.  June 1987, Vivekananda College got Autonomous status.  The Board of studies in Tamil and Academic Council are the apex bodies constituted by the Autonomous office for framing syllabus virtuous to core values along with emerging trends and consent with endorse respectively.  The Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) was also introduced in 2006-2007. The Department of Tamil also extended its dissemination of Tamil Language and Literature teaching to Non-Tamil Language students under Part IV who joined in the UG semester course under CBCS from the academic year 2008-2009.  NP 12 credits are allotted to aided under graduate degree courses, 3 credits are allotted for the self financing under graduate Computer Science degree course and 2 credits for the Non-Tamil Language

To enrich quality education in classical Tamil Language.

To nourish creative achievements in their mother Language towards coherence and cohesion development.

OBJECTIVES

To provide the distillation highlights of historical respective of Classical Tamil Language, Literature and Grammar.

✔ To enable the Ancient Tamils core values ion Tamil Language and Literature for Self Discipline.

✔ To strive the extended programme of Non-Tamil Language Students tangible Skill in Tamil Language and Literature.

✔ To promote the holistic personality development in all aspects.
