Rhapis excelsa (Thunb.) A.Henry

Common Name:
1. Bamboo Palm
2. Braodleaf Lady Palm
3. Fan Tufted Palm
4. Rhapis Palm

Rhapis excelsa grows up to 4 m in height and 30 mm in diameter in multi-stemmed clumps with glossy. Stems slender, conspicuously ringed with old base leaf scars (similar in appearance to bamboo canes), covered with a coarse, matted, brown-black fibrous material derived from the outer base of the leaf sheathes. Palmate leaves divided into broad, ribbed segments. Leaf segments are single or few in young plants and increase to a dozen or more in mature plants; segments are divided to the petiole. Leaf-ends are saw-toothed unlike most other palms, occurring on slender petioles ranging from 20 to 60 cm in length. New foliage emerges from a fibrous sheath which remains attached to the base. As the plants age, the sheaths fall, revealing the bamboo-like trunks. This usually dioecious palm species produces a small inflorescence at the top of the plant with spirally-arranged, fleshy flowers containing three petals fused at the base.
Lady Palm is an evergreen fan palm that resembles a cycad. As an indoor plant, it needs indirect light, withstands deep shade and has low humidity requirements. It needs well-drained potting soil and regular watering except in the winter when watering can be reduced. It is a good specimen to use near doors because of cool air tolerance in winter. Use a balanced slow-release fertilizer during the growing season.
