ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
The Botany Department was started in the year 1982 with UG & Allied Botany. It emerged as a post graduate department in the year 2017. The department has four sanctioned teaching staff and 2 academic support staff (technical) and administrative staff. Currently there are 5 faculty members in the department, 3 are aided & 2 as management appointee.
In order to provide hands on training to students, two separate well equipped laboratories with enough chemicals and sophisticated instruments such as Students microscope, Binocular microscope, Laminar Air Flow, tissue/bacterial Culture chambers, Autoclave, Environmental shaker with incubator, Hot air oven, Colorimeter, pH meter, Digital balance etc. The department has a good stock of herbarium and collection of digital resources for learning purposes. The library in the department helps the students to locate their reference materials. Right now, the department library has nearly 2220 books of national & international standard. Apart from this, several field/industrial trips are arranged to expose the students to the nature and also to the industrial environs.
Students are studying zoology and chemistry as allied subjects. Non Major Elective courses are conducted for our college under graduate students. Apart from the core curriculum, the Department also offers a number of extra certificate courses such as Horticulture, Energy Resources, Mushroom Cultivation and Medicinal Botany etc.
An Association has been formed in the department in the name of Swamy botanical Association (SBA) to organize students meet, expert lectures and various other student development programmes. Several experts from national/regional institutes are frequently invited to deliver lectures on leading topics in the emerging fields of Botany and interdisciplinary titles. SBA is also functioning with following objectives.
To maintain Herbal and Ornamental garden in the College Campus
To train the students to prepare herbal formulations
To exhibit the details of all plants in college campus
Prof S. RAJARAM Served the dept as founder HOD for the longest term (35 years) and retired in the year 2013. Prof G.SENTHILKUMAR rendered his service as Associate Professor for nearly 30 dedicated years and retired in the year 2014. Dr P.T. MANOHARAN elected to Madurai Kamaraj University as Academic Council, Senate and Syndicate Member and worked as an Additional Controller of Examination in DDE, MKU, earned name and fame to our Department and the College. Both Dr P.T. MANOHARAN and Dr. N. LAKSHMANAN are recognized supervisors for guiding Ph.D students.

|Well equipped library. It contains more than 2220 books that include both recent edition text and reference books. Moreover we have CSIR NET EXAM assisted books like Molecular cell Biology by Lodish et al., Biochemistry by Stryer et al., Developmental biology by Gilbert, Plant Physiology by Lincoln Taiz et al., etc. & Selected books.|

|Our students prepare Nilavembu kasayam (Andrographis paniculata) for the treatment of dengue fever and give it to the students of our College, schools, family members in the staff quarters and also to the local people in and around the College, very well appreciated by all. Moreover, Organic vegetable also given to our hostel mess.|
