Department of Botany

About the Department

The Botany Department was started in the year 1982 with UG & Allied Botany. The department has four sanctioned teaching staff and 2 academic support staff (technical) and administrative staff. Currently there are 5 faculty members in the department, 3 are aided and 2 as management appointee in the permanent vacancy. All the faculty members are doctorates.
The department library has nearly 2500 books of national & international standard, and also has well equipped laboratories with enough chemicals and instruments. Totally 80 students are studying in our department.Students are studying zoology and chemistry as allied subjects. None Major Elective courses are conducted for our college undergraduate and post graduate students.Apart from the core curriculum the Department also offers a number of extra- Departmental courses such as Horticulture, Energy Resources, Mushroom Cultivation, Medicinal Botany etc. Tissue culture and Microbiology Laboratory established in the year 2018.
Prof. S. Rajaram served the department as founder HOD for longest term (35 years) and retired in the year 2013. Prof. G. Senthilkumar rendered his service as Associate Professor for nearly 30 dedicated years and retired in the year 2014. Dr. P.T. Manoharan elected to Madurai Kamaraj University as Academic Council, Senate and Syndicate Member, Additional Controller of Examination earned name and served 35 years in our department and retired in the year 2017. Dr. N. Lakshmanan, Associate Professor and Head working with 35 year service and a recognised supervisor for guiding Ph.D. students.Dr. V. Ramesh, Dr. T. Sellathurai appointed as Assistant Professor in the Department during 2016-2017.Dr. C. Soundar Raju (2015) and Mr. P. Pounraj (2017) are working as Assistant Professor in the department under SF scheme.

Our students prepare Nilavembu kasayam (Andrographis paniculata) for the treatment of dengue fever and give it to the students of our College, schools, family members in the staff quarters and also to the local people in and around the College, very well appreciated by all. Moreover, Organic vegetable also given to our hostel mess.
